As I leaned against a tree during my free period, I listened to music as I tried to relax before I would have to reenter society. People were not my strong suit, ever, unfortunately.
I closed my eyes and leaned back before someone took the earbuds out of my ear and I opened my eyes looking up at my best friend, Alexia. Smiling, as the sun behind her made her look like an angel I couldn't help but put my hand on her leg, needing to feel closer to her.
Smiling down at me she took a seat next to me and put one of my earbuds in her ear as she rested her head against my shoulder. I rested my head on top of hers and felt at ease even though I could feel her heart beating and the blood running through her veins. As if she could sense my train of thought she looked up at me with questioning eyes but I shook my head and simply pulled her closer.
She had known what I was since elementary school but, for some reason, she never treated me any differently or called me a monster. Instead, the first time she saw my real face she simply traced the veins on my face with a warm hand before ruffling up my hair.
We stayed like that, my arm around her, for a few minutes until we heard the bell signaling the end of the period which meant it was time for us to go to homeroom. It was another free period but attendance was mandatory and I'm sure Uncle Nik wouldn't approve of my defense that the class is nothing but a filler period.
As I settled into my seat and started working on my history homework, I felt something hit the back of my head and raised my gaze from the book to look around at who had thrown the note that lay crumpled up on the floor by me. I caught Alexis' eyes who pointed at me and picked up the note before uncrumpling it.
'Afterschool? The Grill. Pool and Food?' I frowned before looking at Alexis and shaking my head. Turning back to the note I scribble onto it 'I can't. Uncle Nik wants me home' except the teacher walks by and I use my notebook to cover the note as I pretend to focus on the reading. However, once his back is turned I quickly toss the note over and look at her through the corner of my eye.
She frowns as her eyes scan over it but looks up and smiles at me as she puts two thumbs up. I smile and finish doing my homework. Soon, the bell rings and I throw my extra books in my locker and walk home with a pep in my step.
Using my key, I unlock the door and notice that Uncle Nik is talking to some man in a suit with a woman next to him. Even though he probably heard me enter I call out, "Uncle Nik," and he looks at me as do the people he's talking with.
The woman covers her mouth with her hand before she vamp speeds over to me and I step back, not knowing what to expect. But, she does the last thing I'd think she would and throws her arms around me as she whispers, "Sina mi," in my ear. My hands stay by my side as I say, "You must be mistaken."
The woman's hold falters as she steps back and tears fill her eyes. Feeling immensely guilty I try to fix the situation but she turns away from me and tries to hide her crying but I can tell from the shaking of her shoulders that she's clearly upset.
The man speeds over and holds her as he whispers, "Katerina," in her ear. My eyes furrow as the name rings a bell and I pull my backpack to my front as I hurriedly search for my wallet. The three stare at me as I find it and open it up. Right behind my I.D is a picture that Uncle Nik had given me and I ask, "Katherine Pierce," not turning it over just yet.
Uncle Nik nods his head and I breathe in deeply as I turn the picture over and see the inscription written in Uncle Nik's handwriting. 'Elijah and Katherine. Mom and Dad'. I look between the two of them speechless while Uncle Nik puts a hand on Elijah's shoulder and says, "Joshua, this is your Father and your Mother, Katherine." Not knowing what to do I take a step closer to Mom who looks confused as to what I'm about to do.
However, before I can second-guess myself I wrap my arms around her and rest my head on her shoulder. Tears fill my eyes as she hugs me back and I only move away when Dad places a hand on my shoulder. I had so much I wanted to say to him and despite the tears in my eyes laugh before I see Hope came running down the stairs and out the door. I call her name a few times to see if she would stop but could hear her keep running.
Uncle Nik looks tired and I squeeze his arm before whispering, "I got it." Vamping out of the house, I start to follow her scent through the woods to see if she had stopped anywhere.
(Third Person's POV)
Elijah watched his son go and looked at Klaus who had a fond smile on his face. "Joshua," was all Elijah could say as he stayed looking at the open door and Niklaus patted him on the back as he said, "Your son." and then made his way upstairs to see what happened between Hope and Hayley for his daughter to run out like that.
