I reached over and slammed my hand on top of my alarm clock so that it wouldn't bother Adam even if he was probably already awake. Groaning, I sat up in my bed before grabbing my phone and scrolling through it. I had a few notifications from my family but didn't feel like answering them right now as I shut off my phone and went into the adjoining bathroom.
However before I could start getting ready there was a knock on my door and I stifled a yawn before calling,"Come in." Akhil walked in before muttering curses under his breath as he tripped over my bed sheets that were on the floor and glared at me as he picked them up and tossed them on the bed. Rolling my eyes I stand infront of him as he takes a seat on my desk chair and then whispers,"Just stay home today. I can get your lecture notes and then we can see Dr. Maxwell later." Shaking my head, I take his hands in mine as I lean over him and shake my head before admitting,"I don't want to go. I feel fine."
Akhil shakes his head and I pull my hands from his before going over to my closet and looking for new clothes to start the day but he walks up behind me and wraps his arms around the top of my shoulders. "Akhil," I protest but he shushes me as he lets his head rest against my shoulder and waits for my body to stop being so tense.
When I finally let out a sigh of relief he turns me around by the shoulders and gently cups my face in his hands as he says,"I know, love. I know you feel fine right now but you have to go and I'll be right there with you," taking my hand in his free hand he kisses my hand as he whispers,"I can't lose you Mahi, ever. Please just go," and then as if to make things better wraps both hands around my waist and spins me around as he excitedly offers,"When you're done we can have a movie night and binge whatever you want. I promise!"
I couldn't help the smile that creeped onto my face as I quietly nodded and let my head rest against his chest as he calmly etched patterns down my back. Very rare was it for someone to get to see this childish side of Akhil. He had lived here with his Uncle for the longest time and only went back to see his parents and family during summer. Because of that, he had forgone a lot of the childish tendencies most people experienced and was mostly engrossed in work to prove to his Family that it was right for him to be here.
When we first became friends he was just as stoic and serious until we became closer and he let his guard down around me. It had taken a while but every time I see him truly smile it reminds me of why I fell in love with him in the first place
As if sensing my train of thought his hold arounds me becomes tighter as he whispers,"I should get ready. Love you." Wanting to tease him a little bit to lighten the mood I step out of the embrace and call out,"I know," before rushing into the bathroom before he could catch me. I hear him bang on the door and laugh before turning on the sink so that he knows I don't plan on coming out in a while.
Chapter Break
Akhil shakes his head as he walks away and heads into the kitchen to start making breakfast. Deciding that he had enough time to make some pancakes for the two of them he moved around the kitchen to mix ingredients together.
When he flipped the last pancake Mahira walked out in her college uniform, a button down shirt tucked into her rskirt with black leggings underneath. Placing her blazer on the back of one of the chairs before popping a few of the strawberries in her mouth and then grabbing juice from the fridge.
Before she could sit at the table he wrapped his hand around her arm and backed her up against the counter. She gasped as he ran his thumb down her chin while she wrapped her arms around the back of his neck. Doubting myself he stepped out of the embrace and muttered,"I got a call from Alok bhai (brother)". Her eyebrows raised because Akhil never talked about his family unless it was absolutely necessary. She squeezed his bicep as it seemed he had started to wander and he smiled down at her before kissing her on the forehead. He placed his chin on her head as he whispered,"He told me to come back to Pakistan because Abu wants me to meet possible marriage options."
Mahira stiffened in his arms and stopped holding onto him causing Akhil to pull her closer as he shook his head before placing his forehead against hers. Interlocking their hands he whispered,"I said no, made an excuse about school. But, Mahira" he stopped and stepped back to stand against the opposite counter to giver her some room as he continued,"I want you to meet my family so that we can be married."
Mahira's eyes widened before a small smile broke out on her face. They were broken out of their trance as their fire alarm went off and the pan on the stove went up in flames. Maya ran out of the room causing Akhil to roll his eyes as he grabbed a towel and began swatting at the fire trying to get it to die down. He was gently shoved out of the way by Mahira who unlocked their fire extinguisher and used it to put out the fire.
He couldn't help but smirk and look his girl up and down before she caught his eye and raised an eyebrow and nodded her head. Smirking back at him, she locks the extinguisher and says,"You can deal with the noise before the fire brigade shows up," nodding he watches her walk off before standing on a chair and unscrewing the machine to reset it.
Just as he finished, Mahira walked back into the room with her phone in hand and said,"I'm gonna head into college and leave the car here so you can get to school." Nodding in agreement, Akhil leaned over to kiss her cheek before letting her go and then turning to the mess in the house. Before he started cleaning though he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, blue, velvet box. Flipping it open, he smiled down at the small ring before placing it back inside his pocket and then clearing the table as he stopped every once in a while to pop a few pieces of the pancakes he made into his mouth.
