This is a story that has been written a thousand times, in a thousand different languages. Enjoy.

-------------------

Awkwardly, I sat in the middle of my Mom and Aunt as the men’s side ate more than talked.

“Our son is very successful. He has his own business in Karachi,” their Father stated and I rolled my eyes.

“I’m working on my second degree along with a very successful job in America,” I say out loud and they looked shocked that I said anything.

“Hmph,” Heira Aunty, the groom’s mother said, turning her nose up at me. Mohmi Uncle shifted and said, ”These are some very nice dishes. Did your daughter make them?”

“No. I don’t cook. In fact, I hate being in the kitchen," which was a total lie, "These were made by my sister. So please, enjoy,” I spit out and lean back, looking them in the eye.

“Anyways, for when should we set the marriage," Abu (Dad) says and the Groom looks at me. I shake my head and make a cutting motion across my throat.

The Groom coughs and everyone rushes to give him a glass of water. “Dad, I don’t want to marry her,” he says and I smile as they rush out. Offering a small wave as the man turns to look back.

My cousin, Samail, comes up to me with a plate full of sweets and I picked up my favorite.

Taking a bite I hold out a hand and she sighs, placing a $10 bill into my hand. “Have you gone mad? This is your 5th marriage that’s run out of here,” Mom says taking the plate of sweets away from me and I pout before my Uncle hands me more.

I smile at him and he says,”Baji (siste), why are you getting so angry? Did you see the way they were talking? They ate more than 2x their weight. We can get our girl married in a better place.”

Mom angrily turns around and says, ”WHO? She has no manners. Did you see how she was sitting and talking? What fool would marry her?”

I stand up and spin around. “The same fool who isn’t looking for a ticket to America. I've already made it clear that I don’t want to get married. What is it that you always say? Everything is in the hands of the Lord, then why isn’t my marriage? My fool’s already chosen and when he shows up he will, but not by looking at people who see nothing more than a green card.”

Samail stood up and placed her hand on my shoulder. “Anyways, our Mahira Baji is a killer. In one glance anyone can fall in love with her,” we laugh as she says that and my Aunt lightly hit her shoulder causing us to stop or try to stop.

“All this love stuff is trash. It’s useless. Only happens in movies,” she says and I stand up on the couch.

“You never know. Maybe I’ll find my own Shahrukh Khan,” I say and then laugh as my Mom threw a pillow at me, causing me to jump off the couch.
